Obsession: Eatalian Café

Eatalian

Hidden among warehouses, Gardena-based restaurant, Eatalian Café, can be found bustling throughout the day with pizza and gelato lovers. Eatalian Café prides itself on not only making the most fresh and delicious foods you have ever tasted but for having great performance – and we’ll be the first to say they live up to this!

Ran by Atonio Pellini and his family, Eatalian Café, uses nothing but the freshest ingredients available making sure all its pastas, dough, sauces, gelato, bread and pastries all freshly made every morning! Our mouths are watering just thinking about tasting the freshly baked Tortelli di Zucca (fresh squash ravioli)!

Eatalian also makes sure that all of its foods are filled with passion, memory, tradition and love.   The best part about this place is that it is 100 % authentic since the owners of the restaurant are from Ventoso, Italy (a village of about 800) and grew up cooking their own recipes using the freshest ingredients – they are naturals!

You must go and try one of their thirty famously delicious thin pizzas!

LA’s Fashion Identity is Denim

LA Weekly Fashion Issue 2011

LA Weekly’s annual fashion issue is on stands now, and the paper explores the question, ‘Does LA Have a Fashion Identity?‘ We certainly think so.

For all of the LA style archetypes described in the article – the rocker vampire, the Morrissey, the scarecrow, the skateboarding surfer – the throughline is a great pair of jeans. Writer Gendy Alimurung relays how the average LA resident “hikes and has a dog and eats well” to get that perfect LA body; nothing shows off a great body like a pair of jeans and the right tee.

It’s the confusion about LA’s fashion identity referred to in this piece that gives LA a reputation for being one of worst dressed cities in the US. We think publications like GQ that make this claim are missing the point. LA is stuck taking the blame for the overembellished Ed Hardy look you can find on Melrose Avenue because he happened to set up shop here, but this is not an acceptable look for the majority of Angelenos. Rather, the constant here in LA, jeans, has become an increasingly central piece of a fashion forward equation, which is why you see everyone from Kate Middleton to Emanuelle Alt in the latest rise, and an army of denim bloggers behind them sharing each and every look.

There’s no dispute that New York is the hub of fashion, but the best denim in the world comes from LA. Any brand that wants to compete in premium denim has to have a presence in LA to develop the most current washes and fits and understand how people are wearing denim right now. New York-based brands like Theory, Ralph Lauren, and Johann Lindeberg’s BLK DNM have all crossed the country to develop their denim offering, and San Francisco-based Levi’s produces all of their premium lines out of LA. Even apparel behemoth GAP recently splurged on a 5,400 sq ft. design space called the Pico Creative Loft to house its 1969 denim line, and better position itself to compete with LA’s luxury denim makers.

The article gets closest to the mark when it says “Los Angeles is casual”. We’ll take it a step further, and say Los Angeles is denim, because no fabric exudes “casual” quite like denim.

Behind the Scenes: Video – The Making of a “Glory” Pocket

You already know where the HABITUAL “Glory” pocket comes from, so we thought you might like to see how they are made. It’s a multi-step process as a series of skilled workers cut the cross out, attach it to lining, sew it onto a pocket, and finally fix it to the leg of the pair of jeans. Because every Glory pocket is hand-made, each one is unique to your pair of jeans. Along with the classic Glory pocket you see in this video, other versions of the design, such as distressed or studded Glory pockets, can require additional steps and even more hands-on craftmanship.

Have a look inside the LA factory to see how we take ordinary cloth and turn it into the Maltese cross pattern that decorates the back pocket of many HABITUAL denim designs.

Filling Potholes with Colorful Yarn

Juliana Santacruz Herrera Crack

Does this count as graffiti? We loved this street art concept by Juliana Santacruz Herrera, who decided to brighten up potholes and cracks in the streets of Paris with colorful yarns. Hard to go wrong when you make the city prettier and solve a public nuisance at the same time! You can see more pictures in this post from Freshome.com.

If you’ve felt the potholes on Wilshire Boulevard anytime recently, you would agree LA could really use an artist like this right now. The only challenge would be installing them quickly enough not to get hit! The artist also put a fun time-lapse video of the installation on her Flickr page.

LA Diaper Drive

Jean Diaper

We have no plans for a denim diaper anytime soon… or ever.  But one thing is for sure, babies need diapers much more than fashionistas need their designer denim. Did you know that an infant can go through up to 12 diapers per day? Or that it runs about $100 per month to keep just one child in clean healthy diapers? The costs adds up quickly, and that’s why Caroline Lutz and Melissa Ratcliff, two mothers who met at a baby group, started LA Diaper Drive, an all-volunteer organization which raises money to provide diapers for families in need, so no parent has to make the choice between putting food on the table or providing clean diapers for their children. In addition to providing diapers all year long, LA Diaper Drive also uses their programs to help parents and family members learn important life skills that can improve the well-being of their families.

It’s a great charity if you are in a Mother’s Day giving kind of mood. Learn more here.
