5 Questions: Kimmy Erin Ratican
Kimmy Erin Ratican is no stranger to Hollywood’s glamour and glitz. Originally from Los Angeles, the fashion and beauty expert started her fashion career at the young age of 16, as she was already found styling magazine spreads all around the Los Angeles area. She went on to study Creative Writing at the University of Southern California, while also gaining fashion and editorial experience at Women’s Wear Daily and W Magazine internships. After school, Kimmy started freelancing as a writer, stylist, merchandiser and on-air hostess, and is now regularly asked for her expert advice by KTLA, Good Day LA, Women’s Health and Women’s Wear Daily, to name a few. When Kimmy’s not styling starlets (like Katherine Heigl, Anna Sophia Robb, Olivia Munn, Lauren Conrad and many more!), musicians, brides-to-be, and industry VIPs, you can find her writing on her own blog KimmyErin.com as well as ThePleat.com, OnTheInsideMag.com, and The Hollywood Reporter.
The Habitual team adores Kimmy for her unique style and bubbly personality. We wanted to learn a little more about her, so we asked her our 5 questions…
New York or Los Angeles, and why?
Absolutely LA! I was lucky enough to spend some time in New York as a fashion and beauty editor and got to know it very well, but it was never a city that resonated with me as a born and bred Angeleno. But there is an undeniable unique exclusivity that comes with being in the center of and a part of the center of American fashion and beauty that I don’t think Los Angeles quite replicates for me. But Los Angeles wins because of my lifestyle, general friendliness, getting to carry a heavier purse and wear more daring heels (the uptick to a limited subway system), and accessibility to nature and great light.
Give us a sense of your personal style?
I’m a dire Francophile and my style reflects that Parisian feel of relaxed, menswear-inspired femininity. I love slouchy jeans with a heel, blazers with mini’s, tailored shorts with ruffles.
You’re best known for being a stylist, but what do you consider your greatest talent?
I’m also a writer! I don’t spend enough of my free time (ha ha! free time!) writing, but I do play with blogging and fiction when I can! But shopping is such an ingrained part of me, that I can’t help but admit (well, boast, really) that I consider my bargain-shopping skills to be top-notch.
What’s your daily habit?
I have a lovely ritual every morning, where I make the most delicious almond milk latte’s with my boyfriend which we drink as we check our emails and share news headlines and funny videos. I’m also on YouTube every single day. I’m very excited about all the access to fashion that site brings — I hope more fashion people will log in and get lost in gorgeous shows, interviews, and tips. The beauty world has it covered, but fashion is a whole new world on the Tubes! Love it.
What’s one thing in your closet you could never give up? And what’s your go-to piece in the closet right now?
I would die if anything happened to my grandmother’s fur coat. DIE. The end. Done. It’s the one thing I’d save in my house from a fire.
I have 3 go to’s right now in my closet:
1. My habitual Moto waxed denim jeans in black
2. My Rag & Bone pullovers. Summer sweaters are my jam right now. Theirs are le best (also love Helmut Lang’s and Brochu Walker’s, but r&b just killed it this summer).
3. My Jean Michele-Cazabat Isola pumps. They’re not too high and they are the best black heel I’ve ever purchased.
BONUS: Where do you get styling inspiration from?
My friends! I have a very set kind of style; I love what I love and I do what I do so I tend to only see what I see in a collection. But my fashionable friends see things differently and force me to see things styled in new ways. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by a set of unique friends who inspire me.
