Bands We Love: Imagine Dragons
It was only a year ago that the band members of Imagine Dragons were couch surfing and surviving off of Del Taco before exploding onto the music scene. The indie-rock band was first recognized nationally in November of 2012 when their single “It’s Time” was certified platinum by the RIAA. “It’s Time” gained the attention of Hip-Hop producer Alex Da Kid, who then got the band their first deal with Interscope Records.
So what kind of sound results from an indie-rock band mentored by a hip-hop producer? You get an album meshed with various genres where every song is interwoven with different beats, percussion and guitar melodies. Their album “Night Visions” can be described as a cross between Lil’ Wayne’s lyrics and Coldplay’s electro beats!
The bands’ unique sound can be credited to the city of Las Vegas, where it was formed and developed its musical style. Frontman Dan Reynolds explains he and his three band mates had to compete for attention against show girls and slot machines -forcing them to get creative.
Even the band’s name, Imagine Dragons, is creative. It is actually an anagram in which every letter stands for a phrase that only the band members know!

Nylon Pop-Up Shop
This holiday season, NYLON is hosting a Pop-Up Shop in New York, which is quite the unique VIP shopping experience. It started last Friday, and since you’ll find some of our favorite merchandise there, we stopped by and took a few photos on the opening day! Nylon has created a space that makes shoppers feel as though they are on the set of an exclusive NYLON photo shoot. When we walked into the space NYLON truly made it feel like the pages of the magazine came to life – the merchandise is set up amazingly! They also created a custom bar that features everything you need to complete DIY fashion projects and the latest beauty trends. We had so much fun – it’s open until December 18, so if you are in the area be sure to stop by!
5 Questions: Gili Rashal Niv of The Tip Jar
Based in sunny SoCal, Gili Rashal Niv is the Editor-in-Chief, Founder and resident shopaholic of The Tip Jar, a site that gives daily tips for the best beauty products, fashion finds and store openings. No stranger to the fashion biz, Gili majored in Merchandise Marketing at FIDM, worked at LA’s top boutiques and has been featured in WWD, The Wall Street Journal, C Magazine and more. Now you’ll find Gili putting all of her fashion finesse into styling the well-heeled of the West Coast, as a personal shopper and stylist to many celebrities!
Gili is also a new mother (see photo of her and her daughter below!) and we were so lucky to ask her our favorite five questions and get best tip about styling this winter…
New York or Los Angeles, and why?
I’m definitely an LA girl and always have been. But I’m in love with NY and find whatever excuse I can to head east on mini trips a couple of times a year (as long as it’s not January or February…this West Coast girl can’t handle those temps).
Give us a sense of your personal style?
I haven’t really come up with a “label” for my personal style but certainly does have a So-Cal vibe mixed with a stand out piece to keep it looking different and my own. I could really live in a great pair of jeans and a good t-shirt, then mix in a cool jacket, great shoes and the most important part of all- a REALLY good handbag.
You’re best known for being a fashion and beauty expert, but what do you consider your greatest talent?
Not to sound cliché but I’ve discovered in the last year and a half that being a mom is truly my greatest talent and accomplishment thus far. I’m really good at it! My daughter is 20 months old now and I absolutely love my time with her. The first year was filled with more sleepless nights than I could’ve ever imagined being able to withstand and it is by far the toughest job I’ve ever had. But there are no words to begin to describe how amazing every little moment is.
What’s your daily habit?
I stopped drinking coffee when I got pregnant two years ago and never really had any interest in going back. But I went to NY last month for a couple of days and couldn’t resist a Starbuck’s soy latte with the chilly weather. So since I’ve been back, it’s been an (almost) daily treat I’ve gone back to. And everyday while at my computer I always go to TheSartorialist.com for fashion inspiration, One Kings Lane for home finds, and Shopbop.com or Net-a-Porter.com and add things to my wish list!
What’s one thing in your closet you could never give up? And what’s your go-to piece in the closet right now?
I may never be able to give up my giant Celine leopard tote. I carry it everyday and know that it will still be cool in ten years from now. My go-to piece is definitely my Isabel Marant quilted cotton jacket. Obsessed with it and I find any excuse to wear it.
BONUS: Can you give us your best tip for styling this winter?
Pick up a leather piece! Leather leggings and pants are huge this season but if wearing leather pants isn’t your thing, get a nice leather jacket or a top or dress with leather detail. Make sure though to keep it simple and you really don’t need more than one piece! If leather pants are out of your price range, a great alternative is buying a pair of coated jeans that look just like leather. I love, love, love the Eve High Rise Coated Skinny Jeans from Habitual.
And invest is a great pair of shoes! I prefer cute cropped boots with my winter looks. They go with just about everything and because they’re so big right now, you will find lots of different options to choose from.
Bands We Love: Grass Widow
This all-girl band has had us in a trance recently. It’s probably a combination of their ethereal voices and layering melodies that make their music such an easy listen. They definitely give off a feeling of a punk-y, psychedelic band, reminiscent of the 1970’s. The really cool thing about Grass Widow is that all three of them, Hannah Lew, Raven Mahon and Lillian Maring, contribute to what each song is about. And there isn’t a “head” of the group either, just 3 women who like to make music and share it with the world. They even started their own record label, HLR, after touring Europe, England and China. The ever-creative women have also made some of their own music videos, several of which were written and directed by Hannah Lew.
“Goldilocks Zone” is one of the many songs we’ve had on repeat by them. Hearing the song and watching the music video make you question if you’re in The Twilight Zone, but we’re not complaining. They’re a breath of fresh air because they’re different than other bands that have been gaining popularity recently. We love that they’re not short on authenticity and they’re not afraid to be themselves.
On Trend: Angelina Cigarette Skinny in Fresh Moss
Remember when we told you that mint was on trend earlier this year? Well, it’s not leaving anytime soon! We love the color so much that we decided to pull our favorite mint shades to create our own wash for our Resort 2012 collection, our Angelina Cigarette Skinny jean in Fresh Moss. It’s a wash that adds a little bit of color, but neutral enough that it can be worn like a gray wash. Below are some of our favorite inspiration photos and you can find more on our Pinterest page!
