5 Questions: Audrey Fisher

Audrey Fisher

Summer has always been our favorite season for many reasons. One of the highlights of this summer is the return of HBO’s vampy and sexy hit series, True Blood, on June 10. In anticipation of the premiere of the new season, we were lucky enough to catch up with the creative mind behind the show’s hot vampire looks–Costume Designer, Audrey Fisher.

Before focusing her talents on the small-screen, Audrey’s diverse experience prepared her well.  While attending graduate school at NYU, Audrey started her career as a hat milliner.  Soon, Audrey found herself traveling the world designing costumes for a variety of venues from off-Broadway productions to opera. Audrey eventually found herself back in her hometown of Los Angeles as the Resident Assistant Costume Designer at the Center Theatre Group’s costume shop. Audrey’s gift for imaginative costuming led to her next gig as the assistant designer for the television shows That 70s ShowThat 80s Show and Twenty Good Years. Not long after, Audrey began as an assistant designer on True Blood before ultimately landing her most recent role as the head of Costume Design.

New York or Los Angeles, and why?

Both! I grew up in LA but then really grew up when I decamped to NYC when I was 20 and stayed for almost a decade. So, I feel like a New Yorker, and I’m deeply delighted when people assume that. These two great cities are my yin and yang: NYC recharges my aesthetic battery to 1000% because there’s everyday magic around every corner, and you get to see it up close because you’re on foot. But, LA’s vast cultural landscape begs to be discovered by the curious practitioner…plus her desert light is incomparable.

Give us a sense of your personal style?

I work such long hours, I have to be fairly practical! So I try to keep myself entertained by honing the ideal costume designer’s costume: simple, quality pieces with a smattering of color and cool quirky accessories. Keeping my personal style simple means I can focus more of my energy on creating the characters’ costumes!

You’re best known for your work as a costume designer, but what do you consider your greatest talent?

Multi-tasking…seriously. And I can find inspiration all around me… not a talent, but a necessity.

What’s your daily habit?

Lemon water first thing when I wake up, then focusing on keeping a clear and open mind as I plunge into the work day!

What’s one thing in your closet you could never give up? And what’s your go-to piece in the closet right now?

Can’t give up my grandmother’s 1920 silk crepe Chinoiserie jacket or my black Vivienne Westwood corset. Go-to old friend: Vince black leather moto jacket.

BONUS: If you could be a fantasy character from the show – who or what would you like to be and why?

I wouldn’t mind a cameo as a fierce 1940s-1980s vampire a la Catherine Deneueve in The Hunger…

5 Questions: Jeannie Mai

Jeannie Mai

You probably already know Jeannie Mai as the energetic host of Style Network’s Emmy-nominated show How Do I Look?, but you’ll also see her on NBC’s upcoming style competition show Fashion Star. Jeannie will serve as the show’s Digital Fashionista, alongside host Elle Macpherson and fashion mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos. In addition to chatting up the contestants on air, Jeannie will show off her spunk and style sense online in a series of ten online videos.

Known for using fashion to inspire, educate and empower women, Jeannie recently answered HABITUAL’s 5 Questions, and talked about food, being a fashionista, and “flasses”:

New York or Los Angeles, and why?

Sigh…why are you making me choose? NY for fashion & food, LA for swagger. Meaning…I love NY for the undeniable energy of inspiration for style, and the thousands of food choices can’t be beat. But I love LA for having it’s snobby swagga. Don’t hate.

Give us a sense of your personal style?

I’m playful. My style says it’s time to celebrate whatever I feel blessed to have for that day, whether it be my job, the event I’m hosting, my womanhood, or my imagination. I tend to find all of my inspiration to mix colors and textures through food, not only because I’m a foodiva, but also because I want to look delicious.

You’re best known for your work as a stylist and host, but what do you consider your greatest talent?

My greatest talent is celebrating people’s potential. I’m inspired by everyone, and can be any body’s greatest cheerleader. I believe everyone is uniquely talented- and when you mix that with potential, you have world changers.

What’s your daily habit?

Eating and praying. I love food, and love that it reminds me stop and say Thanks. I can’t live without the two.

What’s one thing in your closet you could never give up? And what’s your go-to piece in the closet right now?

One thing I could never give up are shoes. I feel sexy and powerful when I strut. My go – to piece are my flasses (fake glasses). They’re any body’s best sex-essory. Everyone should own a pair, I have 80.

BONUS: Leather or Lace?

Both, bonded tight.

5 Questions: Angelika

Portfolio shot from Angelika

It’s time for round two of our ‘5 Questions’ feature, an ongoing series where we ask some of our favorite denimheads, media personalities, and celebs about their personal style, hidden talents, and of course their daily habits.

This week, we’re featuring our Spring 2012 look book model, Angelika, who answered some questions for us after last week’s shoot. A California native, Angelika broke into the business when she walked into an agency after some enouragement from her mother. They must have seen the same thing we did, because she was just the girl we needed to model the spring line.

New York or Los Angeles, and why?

Los Angeles, because of the amazing weather, surf and fun times.

Give us a sense of your personal style?

My personal style is really effortless, simple with little hints of something special.

You’re a model by profession, but what do you consider your greatest talent?

My greatest talent, in my perception, is my ability to be multi-talented.

What’s your daily habit?

Ooh, definitely Groundwork’s coffee and then the beach.

What’s one thing in your closet you could never give up? And what’s your go-to piece in the closet right now?

Ehh, everything. It’s really difficult to part with the pieces I’ve aquired. My go to piece currently would be my bathing suit.

BONUS: Heels or flats?

Ooh, they’re both so wonderful, but I would say flats because there’s so much more that can be done in flats.

5* Questions: Jennifer Wojinski, Design Director for HABITUAL

Jennifer Wojinski, Design Director for HABITUAL

There isn’t much that gets us more excited than talking to people. It’s just part of our personality. So we’re embracing our talkative side by introducing a new series called “5* Questions”, an ongoing feature where we ask some of our favorite denimheads, media personalities, and even celebs about their personal style, hidden talents, and of course their daily habits.

So who is first? None other than our own Jennifer Wojinski, Design Director for HABITUAL. In the design world, you’ll have a tough time finding someone who knows more about denim. She developed a particular fondness for vintage denim and Levi’s in her early 20’s, while part owner of a vintage clothing shop. She studied art history at Sonoma State University before going on to complete a fashion degree at FIDM. Jennifer has spent her whole design career in the jeans business, and comes to HABITUAL after stints at LEI, True Religion, Juicy Couture, William Rast and Dylan George. She grew up in Humboldt County, outside San Francisco.

*It’s actually seven. The fifth question is a two-parter and we will always have a bonus question.

New York or Los Angeles, and why?

Los Angeles, of course! I love visiting New York - amazing vibe, culture, food and people, but in Los Angeles I feel more at home, closer to nature and I can catch my breath even when it’s hectic.

Give us a sense of your personal style?

Right now it’s kind of ‘grungy goth’… lots of black, slouchy layers, and I always wear boots. I’m a child of the 90’s.

You’re best known for your work in fashion design, but what do you consider your greatest talent?

Pig training! I grew up in the country, raised animals and my favorite animals were my pigs. I had to train them in order to show and sell them at the local county fair. I bought my first car with my pig cash at the age of 15.

What’s your daily habit?

5am coffee and exercise: gym, yoga or a walk.

What’s one thing in your closet you could never give up? And what’s your go-to piece in the closet right now?

I could never give up my 70’s scallop patchwork leather jacket. My go to pieces right now are actually shoes, my Dr. Martens or my black bumper booties from Opening Ceremony.

BONUS: James Bond or Jason Bourne?

Jason Bourne
