As many of you may know, Tuesday night kicked off South by Southwest (SXSW) festival and concert’s music events in Austin. Even though we were unable to attend this year, we still love hearing about all the exciting new artists that come out of the festival. Last night, the LA Times reported that heads turned at one of the SXSW concerts, and HABITUAL was so excited to hear that one of our favorite new bands that grabbed everyone’s attention. From Athens, Alabama, the band Alabama Shakes followed the talented Fiona Apple’s performance for an amazing performance that surely impressed a crowd of 2,000.
We love the blues-y, old, soulful feel in each song, and we especially love the band’s story. Before the band formed, the lead singer, Brittany Howard, used to deliver mail, while the drummer used to check for radiation leaks. We cannot wait for their album debut in April 10 – until then we will put our favorite songs, “Hold On” and “Boys and Girls,” on repeat in our offices.
We have “sprung” our clocks forward, and now that just means it’s time to pull out our shorts! This spring we are all about our Hi Rise Thalia short. A classic look found in several colors that you can mix and match with any outfit to dress up or dress down. Versatile and cute – what more could you ask for?

We recently came across this fabulous shop on Etsy called Retro Whale by Los Angeles-based artist, Kelly Puissegur. Kelly creates gorgeous paintings and sketches of everything we love: music, animals, song lyrics, movies and oddities. Her goal is to make affordable art that people can appreciate or relate to in some way. In a recent interview in Antler Magazine, she explains that she named herself Retro Whale because she loves everything 70’s and 80’s and she loves the ocean. We love her quotes, we love her process and we love her art. Here are a couple of our favorite pieces.
Extra co-host and Celtics super fan Maria Menounos was seen wearing the HABITUAL Almas Hi Rise Zip Skinny in Snowfall on Saturday at the Lakers vs. Celtics game. Maria attended the game with her new ‘Dancing With the Stars’ partner, Derek Hough. Don’t forget to tune in on the new season on ABC next Monday, March 19. We’ll be sure to root Maria and Derek on this season! Who are you rooting for?

HABITUAL is presenting our Fall 2012 line at LA Market Week this week! You can find HABITUAL at Designers & Agents, New Mart Building, 3rd Floor. Unfortunately Elvis, the poodle, will not be in the booth this time.
We’ve done a lot of exploring on the Eastside of LA recently, and now here’s our weekend shopping guide to for some of our favorite spots at 3rd Street and Crescents Heights Blvd.
Start your trip by energizing and indulging yourself at Fonuts (the name says it all). Almost a completely vegan donut shop, they also serve really tasty iced coffee. We recommend trying the chocolate hazelnut (wheat and gluten free) or the salted caramel “fonuts” (for those of you who don’t have any diet restrictions).
Looking to elongate the life of your favorite pair of denim jeans? Just a short trip away on Beverly Blvd., Denim Doctors is a place we go for all of our denim repairs. With an impeccable attention to detail, Denim Doctors uses a combination of their refined tailoring techniques and vintage machinery. They are especially known for their invisible patch repair work.
And if you are ever feeling on the adventurous side or want to make a statement, you will find some seriously talented tattoo artists at Zulu Tattoo. If you have ever wanted a tattoo, this is the best place to go. It’s clean, friendly, spiritual and every single artist is extremely talented with their own unique style. Getting a tattoo, especially the first, can be an awkward process, and they make sure that every customer feels very comfortable.
End your trip at Toast Bakery/Café. After your long day, go here for a great salad or sandwich fix! Seriously, everything on the menu is exactly what you expected, and it’s all totally customizable.
We are sure you’re asking, “What is crackle coated?” Well, it’s a more distressed take on our coated denim. It’s not intended to emulate the leather look, rather coated denim that has been worn over time. Therefore, it looks a little “crackled.” Our crackle coating is available on our Almas Hi Rise Zip Skinny. The Almas is a skinny cut denim that shows off the legs down below, but comes together up top in a slightly higher rise, perfectly suited to the modern woman.

Oscar-nominated “it-girl” Rooney Mara was spotted wearing one of our newest cuts, the Angelina Cigarette Skinny, while out for coffee in Beverly Hills with boyfriend Charlie McDowell. We have to say, we are pretty excited about this one. We’re huge fans of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,’ and we never imagined that the actual girl with the dragon tattoo would be photographed in one of our favorite black looks. Mara’s had quite a year with her Oscar nomination, and she’s currently gearing up for a role in the Steven Soderbergh drama ‘The Bitter Pill,’ alongside Jude Law and Channing Tatum.
